Extreme heat and raging bushfires have devastated the parched landscape of Western Australia. As temperatures expected to persist soaring above 40C (104F) over the next few days, a major heatwave warning has been declared across a large portion of the southwestern region.

Severe heat alerts have additionally been activated for later this week in parts of SA and New South Wales, as a ridge of atmospheric pressure moves eastward, bringing blazing sunshine to a broad swath of the area.

The mix of tinder-dry land and relentless heat presents a dangerous situation for emergency crews.

In another part of the world, a major city was plunged into darkness recently after strong winds damaged the urban electrical network, with toppled trees knocking out power lines. The weather conditions also led to significant transport delays at a major airport, where numerous air services were cancelled. Severe impact on power systems is anticipated to create ongoing problems as service providers work urgently to restore power to more than 1 million residents.

Meanwhile, a valley known for its clear skies and plentiful sunshine has endured one of its dullest and most overcast periods on record. A specific type of fog, which usually lingers for only a short time, has been unusually widespread and persistent this year, holding the mercury at a key transport hub under 8C for more than a week – the most prolonged period in over three decades. The prolonged fog has been fuelled by exceptional autumn rainfall that resulted in soils saturated.
