UN:Me: A Cerebral Thriller Merging Silent Hill with Among Us Gameplay

The recent Day of the Devs digital showcase revealed a number of intriguing upcoming titles, but one in particular has captured attention: UN:Me. Developed by Historia and Shueisha Games, this solo experience seems to fuse together the dread-filled setting of a Silent Hill title with the suspicion-driven core of Among Us.

"This is a distinctive experience where a young woman harboring several human souls within her must escape from a labyrinth of the mind," explains producer Yasukazu Kawai.

Entering a Shattered Mind

In UN:Me, players take control of an unnamed heroine who appears to be of teenage years. Inside her exist four distinct personas, each with unique fears and motivations. These souls can seize control at will, releasing their innermost phobias upon her suddenly.

Judging by revealed footage, much of the action unfolds within a eerie medical facility, though other scenes show the main character exploring a desolate chapel.

An Environment of Personal Dread

"What makes you afraid of? What causes you uneasy?" poses game director Shun Sasaki. "High places. Small rooms. People in power. Elements that appear minor to others can activate a deep instinct inside us. This game explores that idea — anxieties that are unique to every individual."

The core mechanic revolves around managing the persona that surfaces at a particular moment. However, these identities will change against your will as you play. During exploration, every persona's fears become exaggerated and attack the protagonist one after another. As the persona shifts, so does the specific fear the player experiences.

Unsettling Visuals and a Deadly Decision

Initially, UN:Me displays noticeable visual similarities with the Silent Hill franchise. The setting is filled with orderlies all sporting the identical visage, with disturbingly broad smiles. Patients in the waiting room have large blooms where their necks should be. Flowers are an ever-present element, juxtaposing natural beauty with supernatural dread.

Yet, UN:Me presents a unique twist. Players must determine which of the four souls haunting the protagonist is the "real" one. "Each of the personas claims that the body belongs to them," explains a developer. "During the game, you need to figure out who is authentic."

Once players have deduced a soul is an impostor, they are forced to destroy it. However, since every entity can lie or hide the reality, it is incredibly simple to make a mistake.

"Perhaps you've already eliminated the real [soul] by your own actions," the narration suggests. "The last one standing could be a fraud. In any case, your decisions are irreversible."

UN:Me does not yet have a publicly announced release date, but it is available to wishlist on digital storefronts.
