Tropical Storm Melissa is predicted to strengthen into a uncommon highest-level storm as it veers toward Jamaica, causing deadly flash flooding and mudslides.
The cyclone, which recorded winds of up to 120 miles per hour as of 06:00 GMT, is now shifting north-west in the Caribbean and is projected to make landfall by Tuesday, based on data from meteorological authorities.
Alerts of power cuts and disruption to utilities have been announced as Melissa produces up to thirty inches of precipitation and sea level surges as high as 13ft above ground. "Take cover without delay," locals have been told.
Melissa is the 13th cyclone in the ongoing Atlantic hurricane season, which usually concludes in the eleventh month.
A category five hurricane is the strongest type, with winds of at least 157 miles per hour.
Although the hurricane is projected to reduce in intensity to a fourth-level cyclone before making landfall on the island, experts said there was "minimal real distinction in the overall impacts" upon making contact with land, and that the hurricane will be "at least that intensity" when it strikes the country.
With tropical storm-level winds and rain already expected long before it moves across the island's interior - possibly even the capital, Kingston - warnings emphasize that "safety measures need to be finalized quickly".
"Several days of harmful winds and heavy rainfall have begun and will cause catastrophic and life-threatening sudden floods and many landslides," advised meteorological officials.
Jamaican Prime Minister Andrew Holness commented: "I realize that there are numerous residents who are anxious, who are deeply troubled, and appropriately: worry is natural.
"Yet the best way to manage nervousness and any apprehension and concern is to stay ready."
Inhabitants are being instructed to protect their properties with sandbags and wooden boards, and to accumulate essentials.
Advisories are also ongoing for parts of Haiti encompassing the main city, Port au Prince, the adjacent nation and the eastern part of Cuba, where this storm is expected to bring analogous consequences by the middle of next week.
Rock slides currently triggered by the cyclone have caused two deaths in the country, according to local authorities.
The hurricane is forecast to cross Cuba by Wednesday before traveling via the Antillas Mayores and entering the open ocean.
By the point it makes contact with Cuba, it is forecast to have diminished to a third-level cyclone.
