The Legendary Williams, 45, Awarded Special Entry for First Australian Open in Half a Decade.

Seven-time Grand Slam title holder Venus Williams has secured a wild-card entry for the first Grand Slam of the year, commencing on the 18th of January in the city of Melbourne.

Historic Return to Melbourne Park

The event organizers announced on the weekend that the forty-five-year-old icon will grace the courts again at the tournament venue a staggering 28 years after her first appearance. Back in 1998, she overcame her younger sister Serena in the early stage before bowing out in the last eight to fellow American Lindsay Davenport.

Gearing Up for the Summer Swing

Venus had earlier stated in November her plans to compete in Auckland, New Zealand, where she was likewise awarded a special entry, two weeks before the Australian Open. Organizers added that Williams is scheduled to participate in Hobart, Australia a week later, immediately prior to the start of play at the main venue.

Her last appearance in Melbourne was in 2021, and she has been a finalist in the women’s singles on two occasions, losing to Serena in the championship matches of 2003 as well as 2017.

"I am thrilled to return in the country and eagerly anticipating competing during the Australian summer," Williams said. "I have experienced so many incredible moments there, and I’m thankful for the chance to go back to a venue that has meant so much to my career."

Williams' career statistics at the Australian Open stands at an impressive 54 victories and 21 losses. This year will represent the 22nd time she has competed in the primary tournament field.

Officials pointed out that Williams is poised to be the most senior female player to take part in an Australian Open singles competition, surpassing the mark previously held by Japanese Kimiko Date, who was forty-four when she lost in the opening round at the venue in 2015.
