The direst possible consequences of the climate emergency for the UK have been outlined by researchers, including a blistering 4C rise in average temperatures to a 6.5-foot increase in sea levels. Another scenario predicts a drop of 6C in temperature following the shutdown of crucial Atlantic Ocean currents, which would profoundly upset agriculture and power requirements.

Credible Outcomes, Not Guarantees

These effects, certain ones are connected to climate tipping points, are seen as unlikely but plausible. The researchers explained that these projections filled a gap in planning that had rendered the UK ill-prepared for extreme outcomes.

"The severe weather events we have detailed should not be seen as certainties, but they are credible," said the professor who led the study. "Britain has been formulating policy without the methods to plan for catastrophic outcomes. We've now given decision-makers what they need to plan for future conditions they hope never happen, but must not overlook."

A Range of Extreme Weather Possibilities

A second set of dire projections sets out the projected severity of extreme weather between now and the year 2100. These suggest that temperatures could skyrocket in particular seasons by up to 6C higher than the norm, while rainfall could be three times typical amounts.

The probability of the extreme scenarios occurring could not be calculated due to unknown factors about what action will be enacted to combat climate change and how the climate system will respond. This research was described as similar to national security risk assessments or stress tests for financial systems.

Major Scenario Highlights

  • Four-Degree Warming: Worldwide averages exceeding 4C by 2100 could occur if climate action breaks down or if strong feedback loops like the Amazon basin becoming a net carbon source release its enormous store of carbon. This would result in extreme and prolonged heatwaves and dry spells plaguing the UK in summer.
  • AMOC Shutdown: A key circulation system, the AMOC, is losing strength and becoming unstable due to climate change. A full shutdown commencing by 2030 would lead to a six-degree temperature drop in the UK. "Agriculture would be severely challenged and water resources would be completely altered," said the professor.
