Our team is checking video footage and photographs posted this morning that purport to show the aftermath of a alleged car bomb blast that authorities in Russia state fatally injured a high-ranking soldier in Moscow.

Russian authorities stated that Lieutenant General Fanil Sarvarov was in the car that detonated and that he later died to his wounds. A probe is currently ongoing.

The initial step to verify the location from which the pictures were from relied on social media reports saying the blast happened on Yasenevaya Ulitsa in the southern district of the capital city of Russia.

Our analysis employed street-view imagery on Google Maps and the Russian search engine Yandex Maps to corroborate the distinctive yellow colour of a adjacent apartment building captured in the footage.

Locating other structures, lamp-posts and the street layout confirmed where the pictures were taken.

We also checked that the videos were new and that the images had not undergone manipulated.
