Flight Disruptions in America Set to Intensify, Transport Secretary Alerts

American flight controllers are more and more looking for additional employment and calling in sick, as they remain on duty unpaid during the federal closure, the transportation secretary has announced.

"The controllers are wearing thin," the official told a news outlet on Sunday, as certain aircraft were halted on the California shoreline due to staffing shortages.

After the federal closure on October 1st, flight controllers, who are considered essential workers, were told to continue performing their jobs without pay.

But a number have been absent, causing airports to stop or slow their flight operations, which has added to setbacks caused by weather and other issues.

Over 3,000 US flights were delayed on the weekend, and Duffy stated he anticipates the circumstances to deteriorate further.

"I am seeing the pressure," he remarked in an interview on a weekend program, adding that he had met with several controllers to listen to their concerns directly.

"They are pursuing second jobs, they're out there looking, 'Should I drive Uber, am I able to secure an alternative of income to cover expenses?'" he added.

Duffy added that on the previous day twenty-two notifications at airports indicated flights would be held up due to a shortage of employees - one of the highest since the shutdown started.

The US government shutdown reached its twenty-sixth day on Sunday, rendering it the second-longest halt in history.

Duffy has repeatedly warned that aviation regulators would reduce the number of aircraft in the sky if there is a shortage of safety personnel.

In his interview, he declined to respond straightforwardly when asked if it was secure to fly in the US, and instead made a direct appeal to controllers.

"I require my controllers focused on the flight paths, not on the monetary matters at home," Duffy stated.

On Sunday, some planes were grounded at LAX due to employee deficits, causing disruption at the fifth-busiest terminal in the nation and among the most crowded in the globe, as well as other flights stretching upward to the metropolis of Oakland.

The Federal Aviation Administration alert went out at 8:45 AM in the morning on Sunday. Many flights were operating normally by midday.
