2K Hires Popular Battle Royale Developer to Rescue Troubled Action Game Ambitious Title

The renowned publisher has secured Ben Brinkman from Respawn Entertainment to lead the studio crew at 31st Union, which is currently developing the anticipated over-the-shoulder action-packed title known as this innovative game.

Leadership Change Comes After Poor Reception

Brinkman assumes the role of studio head at 31st Union following the dismissal of former leader Michael Condrey, who was removed from his post due to the game's underwhelming early showing last fall.

Recently, 2K president David Ismailer notified employees about this organizational change through an official communication, which emphasized that early feedback sessions had shown the need for a clearer game identity.

Ismailer stated that the team is now refining Project Ethos with a revised approach, aiming to satisfy community desires.

Trend of Key Acquisitions

The news follows a comparable action taken by the publisher in August, when they hired Rod Fergusson from the Diablo team to assist with the BioShock studio Cloud Chamber.

Here is the complete content from the president's memo:

Hello Everyone—

I understand you all just finished your meeting - I trust you’re as thrilled as I am with the positive developments. Previously I shared you all a note, I mentioned the following: “I am confident in this crew. You all are some of the most motivated and creative designers we have had the opportunity to partner with - and we’re eager for that collaboration to persist.”

Through your commitment and versatility, particularly over the past twelve months, you continue to prove that.

The community feedback from last fall’s Project ETHOS testing phase was enlightening. It confirmed the potential of a roguelike shooter but made clear we still had improvements to make. It revealed the requirement for a clearer vision.

The progress is encouraging to see how far you’ve come. You embraced the criticism to consideration and overhauled Project ETHOS with a refreshed goal - one that’s poised to deliver on its promise to our players.

The belief in this project increases every day. To advance the remarkable advancement you’ve made, I am thrilled to announce Ben Brinkman as the new Studio Head of the team. Following several months of talks, he starts with us on next week.

His management and background in the PVP shooter field is considerable, having devoted the past decade and a half developing and leading some of the most well-known franchises in the industry, such as Call of Duty: Black Ops, and more recently, the battle royale hit.

Please join me in receiving Ben soon. We are all excited to persist seeing the development of the game in the time to follow.

The President
